Hybrids
One of the most unique features about A Wonderful Life is the fact that, with the help of a talking plant named Tartan, you can mix two vegetables or two fruits to come up with a brand new plant or tree!

Tartan
Tartan will arrive any time after the start of Chapter 2 - provided that you're good friends with Takakura. Enter Takakura's house late at night, and you should get the scene in which you are introduced to Tartan. Tartan will always be in Takakura's house after that.
Tartan will not make hybrid crops for you right away. You have to befriend it first. Just talk to it for a little while every day, and you'll become friends with it in no time.
Normally, when Tartan asks you if you want something from it, it will only give you two options: have him investigate a fruit or vegetable for you, or talk with you. Eventually, a third option will appear: make a hybrid crop. Select that option (it will always be the one on top) and Tartan will attempt to make a hybrid out of whatever you feed it.
But not every combination will result in a hybrid, and Tartan hates carrots so much that it will only accept them in seed form! And, more often than not, Tartan will not make a hybrid the first time you try. You will probably have to feed it the same two seeds or vegetables/fruits many times in order to get a hybrid.
Tartan can do more than create hybrids. Feeding it a seed and a flower may give the seed special properties (however, this will not work for tree seeds.)
Happy Lamp:
These are the small red tulip-like flowers that grow near Gustafa's hut during the month of Summer. Feeding Tartan a seed and a Happy Lamp flower will allow the seed grow in any season.
Gemsoil:
These are the golden flowers that grow near the ruins in the month of Fall. Feeding Tartan a seed and a Gemsoil flower will allow the seed to be planted anywhere. This is very useful for second and third generation crops, as they can normally only be planted in semi-fertile or very fertile soil.
Upseed:
These flowers are rare, but very, very useful! They are the orange and yellow flowers that grow in various places during the month of Winter (you can find one on the path to the ruins and another near Cody's house.) Feeding a seed of B or A quality and an Upseed flower to Tartan will result in an S-rank seed. This isn't the only way to make seeds a higher quality, though: mixing an S-rank seed with an A or B rank will probably do the trick, too!
Hybrids
None of the hybrids have English names, so they will have to go by their Japanese names for now.
Note:
- 1st generation refers to the "normal" plants (tomato, watermelon, turnip, etc).
- 2nd generation refers to the hybrids made of the 1st generation plants.
- 3rd generation refers to hybrids made of the 2nd generation plants. Tartan lets you assign 3rd generation plants a name!

3rd Generation
Note: 3rd generation plants have no name, although some of them might look quite similar to certain crops that you can't buy from Vesta's farm (for example, peanuts and eggplant are among the 3rd generation crops!) When Tartan creates a third generation crop, he asks you to assign a name to it. Since there are no set names for these crops, I will be numbering them. There are 24 altogether.
Also, there are multiple ways to make third generation crops! Some of them only have one fixed "recipe", but the others are more open.
